For the first time in Colizé, the underground floor was open to the public, where gladiators were prepared for battle.

06.08.2021

Italy has opened its borders for tourists and will now be able to see the re-established Coliza and, for the first time in history, its underground structures (hypogee) under the lease. That's where the gladiators were preparing for battle.

For centuries, hypoges and Kolyzai were generally used for economic needs (producing fruit crops, burial construction). 420 species were found in the amphitheatre, many of which are not specified for Europe. Their seeds are believed to have been taken from Africa into animal hair. And it's a sad story, because, in addition to gladiators, elephants, lions, tigers, runaways are dead in the arena. Many of them were shipped from a neighbouring continent. They were also kept underground. The lifts were used to lift them to the surface, suggesting a high level of engineering thinking. This is also evidenced by the fact that Coliza was built in record time in 10 years.

The total area of underground rooms and tunnels is 1.5 hectares, all of which are already available to visitors. By 2023, Colise will reinstate the lease of 3,000 square metres that has been missing since the nineteenth century, allowing tourists to see the greatness of the amphitheatre from within.
