Dalton Plan

In anticipation of achieving a balance between the talents of each child and the needs of the growing American community, Helen Parkhurst has created an educational model that meets the progressive spirit of that century. The main objectives of the programme were to provide an educational programme for every student under his or her requirements, interests and abilities; to develop students ' social skills and a sense of responsibility towards others.

History

The Dalton School, originally known as the Children ' s University School, was founded by Helen Parkhurst in 1919. This time was accompanied by an educational reform. Philosophers, teachers and psychologists called him “progressive”, which is where the road began, leading from a imaginary memory and learning to a fundamentally new education, and alternatives to classic lessons emerged. Their educational foundation was games, movements and conversations.

Progressive

Teachers believed that the development of the child in general was a matter of paramount importance; that children were socially oriented creatures and schools should be a place where they could learn to live hand in hand with others; that those schools should devote themselves to enriching the minds, bodies and spirit of children.

Expanded and growing over the years, Dalton has maintained many traditions built by Helen Parkhurst, including the Lighting Ceremony, the Greek Festival and Arki Day (Arch Day).

Recognition

There are also three schools based on the Dalton Plan in Japan. Lead teachers from public and private schools and universities from the United States and abroad travelled to Dalton to meet the learning system.
